Marcel Duchamp, 1887-1968 was one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. He was the Daddy of Dada and the Grandpa of Pop. In between, he was one of the most respected members of the Surrealist circle. Wishing never to repeat himself, he also started movements that evolved into Op, Kinetic and Conceptual Art.To thousands of artists, Marcel Duchamp is the man who "set them free" to be whatever they wanted to be, and do whatever they wanted to do. Above all, Duchamp reinvigorated fine art as a way of thinking, and not just as a way of looking. In short, he was an artist-philosopher.

This exhibition presented the work of not only Marcel Duchamp but also many leading Surrealists including European Artists: Jean Arp, Salvatore Dali, Max Ernst, Giacometti, Rene Magritte, Jean Miró and Henry Moore; American Artists: Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell, Noguchi and Man Ray. The exhibition concludes with works done during the Post War works by Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol.

The exhibition was originally mounted at the Pasadena Art Museum, now the Norton Simon Museum. For reference, Marcel Duchamp had his first museum retrospective in 1963. Most of the works by Duchamp on view in the Norton Simon exhibition were exhibited in that 1963 retrospective. The Museum's Duchamp collection is the largest in California.
